Historically, increased credit union competition in Idaho and Montana has caused commercial banks to offer higher deposit rates to savers and lower loan rates to borrowers. Data are collected for the second quarter of 2018 to examine whether that pattern still holds true. Unlike prior studies, empirical results indicate that credit union competition no longer exerts statistically reliable impacts on deposit rates or loan rates in this northern Rocky Mountain region of the United States. Potential contributing factors include bank and thrift consolidation in recent years, the low interest rate environment prevailing during the late 2010s, and greater emphasis on non-interest forms of intermediary competition in the banking markets that comprise this regional economy.

We analyze the annual microdata of China's 100 commercial banks from 2007 to 2018 using the mediating effect analysis method, analyze the negative impact of economic policy uncertainty on the credit scale of commercial banks, and then verify the intermediary effects of the operational risks and short-term capital liquidity of commercial banks in the impact of economic policy uncertainty on the scale of commercial bank credit, separately. Moreover, we find that non-state-owned commercial banks, large-scale commercial banks, low-leverage commercial banks, and commercial banks with low profitability are more susceptible to economic policy uncertainty affecting commercial bank credit growth through short-term capital liquidity, and vice versa.

Since 2011, the conflict in Syria left the country with a devastating energy sector and fragile economy. The residents struggle daily to live with only two hours a day of electricity. The crisis encouraged some Syrians to assemble photovoltaic (PV) panels to generate energy. Unfortunately, the geopolitical risks, the inflation, and displacement are making the situation worse. The geopolitical risks are complex and multifaceted due to the ongoing war and the involvement of various regional and international actors. In this letter, we focus on the situation in war-torn Syria, its economy, and the opportunities for renewable energy development in the country. We also give some recommendations for academics and policy makers.

Objective: The DSS was utilized to construct colitis model of mouse. The colitis mice were colonized with gut microbiota. The effects of gut microbial metabolites on colitis were studied. The mechanisms of gut microbial metabolites to improve intestinal immunity were also further explored. Methods: The male BALB/c mice were selected to construct colitis mouse model with DSS and colonized with gut microbiota. The content of short-chain fatty acids in intestinal metabolites of mice during modeling were detected with GC-MS. After the mice were sacrificed, the colon tissue was stained to observe the colitis in different groups of mice. The contents of IL-22 and IL-17 in colon tissue was determined with ELISA method. To study the mechanism of relieving colitis, qRT-PCR and western blotting were used to study the horizontal of Ffar2 gene and pSTAT3 and pAKT in colon tissue, respectively. The congenital lymphocytes were isolated and purified, and the migration ability of the congenital lymphocytes was examined by cell scratch plane migration test. Results: The colonization of the gut microbiota had significant effects on the contents of short-chain fatty acids in the intestinal metabolites of colitis mice, of which the effect on the content of acetic acid and butyric acid was more significant. The colonization of gut microbiota could effectively relieve colitis in mice and effectively promote the secretion of IL-22 in colon tissue. Studying the remission mechanism indicated that colonization of gut microbiota with colitis could effectively promote the expression of Ffar2 gene in colon tissue and increase the expression of pSTAT3 and pAKT protein. The migration ability of the lymphocyte was significantly upregulated in the model group compared with the other groups, demonstrating that DSS can effectively activate the lymphocyte; The migration of congenital lymphocyte in the experimental group was significantly alleviated than that in the model group, but it was up-regulated than that in the positive control group, and the colonic tissue of the positive control group was similar to that of the normal group. Conclusion: The short-chain fatty acids in the intestinal flora metabolites can promote the gene expression of the metabolite-sensitive receptor Ffar2. The effective combination of short-chain fatty acids and Ffar2 receptors can promote the phosphorylation of STAT3 and AKT proteins, effectively promote the secretion of IL-22 in intestinal ILC3 cells, alleviate colitis in mice, and thereby improve their intestinal immune function.

How does democracy relate to the initial economic policy responses to Covid-19? Using a cross country analysis, we find that countries with a higher degree of democracy have stronger economic policy responses than their peers. However, when we separate monetary and financial policies from fiscal policy, democracy is not associated with the latter when we control for the income level of a country. Finally, for countries with lower levels of labor participation, high levels of income inequality are associated with weaker policy responses.

Competitive balance indicates the degree of control participating teams have over a sports competition. Supporters look for excuses to justify their team’s defeat and the triumph of their rivals. If the competition has required a preliminary qualifying group stage, they will argue that the winning team was in an "easy group" from the start, and their team was unlucky to be in a "difficult group". It is therefore of interest to determine what is an "easy group" and what is a "difficult group". This is directly related to the concept of competitive balance. We have a wide range of indices to measure competitive balance. We will use the Distance to Competitive Balance, a standardized index that complies cardinality property. The perfectly unbalanced distribution is the truncated cascade, which allows the maximum value of concentration to be obtained. We focus our attention on the UEFA Champions League, before and after competition, and we measure the competitive balance of the qualifying stage groups between the 1999/2000 and 2022/2023 seasons. The composition of the UEFA Champions League groups seems to be balanced and has no influence on which team will be the champion. A highly competitive group will be more "difficult" in terms of qualifying than a highly concentrated one. Supporters say that their team was unlucky to be in a “difficult” group, but the data does not prove them right.

The objective of this research is to investigate, using time series data ranging from 1992 to 2021, the effects of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and foreign direct investment (FDI) on economic growth (GDP) in India. The stationarity of the data was examined by employing unit root tests, and an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) technique was used to investigate the link between the factors, taking both the long- and the short-run into consideration. According to the findings, an increase of one percent in both ICT and FDI will result in an increase of 0.56% and 0.71% in GDP over the long term, in addition to an increase of 0.11% and 0.29% over the short term. The findings of the investigation are of particular significance to policymakers because they can be utilized to establish sensible policymaking for long-term economic success, in addition to advancing the ICT sector and boosting FDI.

Understanding the economic trends and demographic dynamics of a country is crucial for policymakers and researchers to formulate effective strategies and policies. This study aims to examine the GDP trends and aging index dynamics in Portugal from 2011 to 2021, with a focus on regional disparities and their implications for demographic challenges. The findings highlight the relationship between regional GDP and the aging index, indicating that regions with higher GDP values tend to have a relatively younger population, while regions with lower GDP values have a relatively older population. The study contributes to the existing literature on population aging by providing insights into the demographic, economic, and social implications of an aging society. It provides valuable insights into the demographic, economic, and social implications of population aging in Portugal. The findings contribute to the existing literature and can inform policymakers and stakeholders in developing targeted strategies and policies to address the specific challenges faced by each region.

The metaverse, with its immersive and interactive capabilities, is reshaping the landscape of economic activities, creating a paradigm shift in the way consumers shop, sell, and buy goods and services. The study delves into the impact of virtual reality (VR) technologies on consumer behavior, business models, and the overall economy. It investigates how VR is revolutionizing the shopping experience by offering immersive, personalized, and interactive platforms, thereby influencing con-sumer decision-making processes. The paper further examines the implications of these changes for businesses, particularly in terms of strategy, operations, and customer engagement. Moreover, the paper discusses the challenges and opportunities presented by the metaverse economy, including issues related to privacy, security, digital divide, and regulatory frameworks. It also highlights the potential of v-commerce to drive economic growth, innovation, and sustainability in the digital age. Overall development of a country largely depends on the economic policy instruments particularly fiscal and monetary policy to streamline the development and continue the developmental progress. These two policies have significant effects on long-term growth. It is noticed that policy adoption and reforms in both fiscal and monetary policies undertaken by Southeast Asian nations during the 1960s through 1990s have contributed to their advancement. This paper discusses the strategies for flourishing as emerging economies. Examples from Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam are highlighted in this study. It is found that prudent fiscal and monetary policy, effective discounting and interest rate; modernized tax system and most importantly policy regime are the contributing factors of these emerging economies. However, in spite of high-income growth and development because of supportive these policy initiatives, administrative and politico-economic constraints challenged the path of economies. Long-term development strategies are suggested to sustain the growth and continue the development pace.

Technological advancements in the last few decades have created energy and cost-efficient power plants, but it is not a prominent feature in the electricity supply-chain. While many long-term and short-term energy alternatives are available, Pakistan still has a significant number of people who do not have access to electricity; as there are many areas that are neither connected to the national grid nor the provincial grids. This paper aims to find the reasons behind the energy crisis in Pakistan, keeping Islamabad as the focus of study, and to find the effect of use of renewable resources on the reduction of shortage of electricity. We will be focusing on the facts that how energy crisis has been affecting the economic growth of the country.  Our data collection will be based on primary sources and secondary sources along with which we will be conducting pilot study to check the feasibility of using the solar energy as an alternative form of electricity.

We offer an extensive analysis of the significance of information within the realm of Gaussian quadratic economies. We build upon the seminal papers of Morris and Shin (2002, 2007) and consider a signal game of incomplete information. Particularly, we question the suitability of partial transparency portrayed by fragmented information in addition to the private signal in terms of welfare effects. We can summarize our findings in two main points. First, fragmented information, in conjunction with a private signal, can reduce the reliance on public signals. Second, a conflicting effect arises between increasing full disclosure and increasing the precision of fragmented (semi-public) information when examining different complex scenarios, involving for example endogenous private information or imperfect correlated signals. For a critical threshold, an optimal communication strategy designed by fragmented information should be implemented whenever that kind of information is acquired at a high precision.

This study simultaneously tests Wagner’s law on one hand and Keynes proposition on the other hand related both government spending and output in Ivory Coast that experiencing long run economic growth and widened deficit. That challenges the country’s fiscal sustainability. With annual data from 1980 to 2020, results show that Wagner’s law holds, the elasticity of government spending to output is greater than one. There is bidirectional causality between government size and output validating Keynesian idea that public expenditure is an exogenous factor and a policy instrument for increasing national income. Wagner law and public deficit can justify Ivorian over-indebtedness.

China's carbon emission trading market has been formally established, but few studies have been conducted to analyze the impact of this policy on the regional urbanization level. Therefore, this paper evaluates whether the carbon trading pilot policy can enhance the regional urbanization level in China through the difference-in-differences method and analyzes the mediating role of industrial structure upgrading in this process. The results prove that the carbon trading market policy can accelerate the transformation and upgrading of industrial structure in the region so that it promotes the development of regional urbanization. Moreover, the effects of the policy are concentratedly manifested in the eastern region of China.

The primary goal of this research is to examine how different types of energy are used in South Asian countries and how they affect the environment and economic growth. From 1990 through 2021, this research employed Panel Data from multiple sources covering the South Asian countries of Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, and Afghanistan. The results are determined by using the Fixed Effect Regression (FEM) technique in both models. Several significant findings are supported by the data. First, while using renewable energy flattens carbon dioxide effusion, using non-renewable energy sources increases it. CO2 emissions are affected negatively by gross domestic product but positively by gross domestic product square. These results provide credence to the idea that South Asian countries do experience an Environment Kuznets Curve. Furthermore, foreign direct investment has a beneficial effect on CO2 emissions, lending credence to the Pollution Haven Hypothesis. Model 2 instead finds that both renewable and non-renewable energy consumption contributes to economic expansion. Gross Fixed Capital Formation and foreign direct investment also contribute to economic growth in this area. Finally, Inflation retards economic expansion.

Breast cancer, as a malignant tumor with easy metastasis and poor prognosis, threatens the health of women around the world. Increasing studies have shown that the Bcl-2 family of apoptosis-related proteins is often expressed abnormally in breast cancer. The Bcl-2 homology 3 (BH3) mimetic peptide can bind and neutralize Bcl-2, preventing its binding to the apoptosis "effector" proteins Bak and Bax, thereby promoting the apoptosis process. However, there is a lack of effective intracellular delivery system for BH3 to exert its biological activity. Therefore, this study utilized an activatable supercharged polypeptide (ASCP) tumor-targeted delivery platform based on pH and protease response to achieve the targeted release of BH3 at the tumor site. Ultimately, intracellular delivery of BH3 was achieved and induced apoptosis of breast tumor cells, preventing the development of breast cancer.

Based on the empirical data of 6110 listed export companies in China from 2010 to 2019, this paper studies the impact of China's economic policy uncertainty (EPU) index on the profitability of listed companies from the specific perspective of export companies, and analyzes the moderating effects of different factors on this impact. The results show that China's EPU index has a significant negative impact on the profitability of listed export companies, and the increase in R&D investment and wage returns will aggravate this negative impact. In addition, listed export enterprises with different enterprise characteristics have different responses to EPU. State-owned enterprises and enterprises located in coastal areas are relatively less negatively affected by EPU.

Banks operating within a free economic environment and with constructive regulatory frameworks can function with enhanced efficiency, augmenting their profitability. This study aimed to examine the influence of economic freedom and financial restrictions on banks' profitability within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation member nations. The study used a sample of 1453 banks, collecting panel data spanning 13 years. The System-GMM methodology was justified based on the enduring characteristics of the data and the profitability metrics. The dependent variables, namely the Net Income Margin, Return on Average Assets, and Return on Average Equity were individually examined. The research findings indicate that most economic freedom indicators, except for investment freedom, harm bank profitability. The influence of the rule of law on profitability indicators is mostly adverse, although regulatory quality within the financial system has a comparatively favorable effect on profitability. Furthermore, bank-specific performance indicators had a negative impact on profitability, except for bank size. Moreover, country-specific variables substantially impact banks' profitability, including inflation, tax, and interest rates. The presence of Islamic banking has been shown to substantially impact the profitability performance of banks within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. OIC banks' profitability is adversely impacted by the ongoing health crises, including the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since the Industrial Revolution, the emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases by human production activities has increased year by year, and the greenhouse effect has also increased. A series of problems, such as global warming, melting of the Antarctic continent, sea level rise and frequent occurrence of extreme climate, have attracted the attention of countries all over the world. As a developing country with the fastest economic growth rate, China's rapid economic growth is inseparable from the contribution of manufacturing industry. As an important engine of China's economic development, manufacturing industry inevitably brings environmental problems and a large number of greenhouse gas emissions while promoting rapid economic development. Therefore, manufacturing has become a major area for China to achieve its carbon emission reduction targets. With the "Made in China" to the world, the export trade of manufacturing industry plays a decisive role in China's total export trade and even the global trade. But whether the huge export demands will affect carbon emissions. Through the empirical study on carbon emissions of China's manufacturing export trade, the paper found that the increase of export demand of manufacturing industry will indeed bring a significant increase in carbon emissions, but also affected by some other factors. Finally, it provides reference for the high-quality development and export of China's manufacturing industry under the background of the target of “dual-carbon”.

The recent interest rate policy decisions of the South African Reserve Bank have been criticized significantly by left-leaning political parties and civic society organisations for being anti-poor, anti-labour, and pro-capital because of their implications for household debt. Existing literature has established that interest rates and house prices are insignificant determinants of household debt dynamics in South Africa. Taking advantage of additional data for the period 2013-2022, and contrary to the previous studies, the paper maintains that house prices and the central bank policy rate play a crucial role in household debt dynamics. Applying a Markov Switching regression to quarterly data for the period 1981Q1 to 2022Q1, the paper finds that house prices and the policy rate have a significant influence on household debt dynamics. It establishes the existence of a ‘house price boom, low policy rate burden’ regime and a ‘high policy rate burden, low house price’ regime. The coexistence of the ‘house price boom’ and the ‘low policy rate’ explains the debt euphoria characterised by significant household leveraging.
