The business cycle’s influence on share repurchases of the UK
by Adhiraj Sodhi , Cesario Mateus , Irina Mateus  and  Aleksandar Stojanovic
Abstract
The UK fully legalised open market share repurchases in 1981, and to our knowledge no study has investigated the business cycle’s influence on repurchase decision-making. We address this aspect and investigate the period 1985-2014. This is relevant as the business cycle factors impact the firm-specific variables such as cash flow, profitability, dividends and capital stru [...] Read more

by Victoria Dobrynskaya  and  Julia Grebennikova
Abstract
We quantify financial returns to backers in reward-based crowdfunding projects on Kickstarter and show that such investments provide profitable opportunities in addition to non-monetary benefits. The average unconditional annualized return is 11.5% and the average return on successful projects is 30%. Hence, backing money near the end of a campaign, when the probability of succ [...] Read more

Are Banks Too Many? A Theoretical Possibility and a Policy Issue
by Gerasimos T. Soldatos  and  Erotokritos Varelas
Abstract
Motivated by the Blackorby-Schworm (1993) observation that market outcomes may differ from those originating in market-actor optimization, this paper claims that the number of banks in the market is larger than the number justified by bank profit maximization alone or in combination with bank depositor welfare maximization. This claim is made within the context of bilateral mon [...] Read more

Volume Accounts of FISIM: a Comparative Study between Stocks Deflation Method and Output Index Method
by Xiaoai Jia , Panpan Wang , Ziying Hao  and  Zhiyong Zheng
Abstract
Because of the complexity of indirect financial intermediary services (FISIM) accounting, the traditional price index deflation method can no longer meet its accounting needs. The manual of price and volume measurement suggests that the stock deflation method and output index method should be used to calculate the volume of FISIM. Comparing the two accounting frameworks, it can [...] Read more

Forecasting Parameters in the SABR Model
by Li Chen , Jianing Zhu  and  Cunyi Yang
Abstract
We present two approaches to forecasting parameters in the SABR model. The first approach is the vector autoregressive moving-average model (VARMA) for the time series of the in-sample calibrated parameters, and the second is based on machine learning techniques called epsilon-support vector regression (ε-SVR). Using daily data of S&P 500 ETF option prices from Janu [...] Read more

College Selectivity, Choice of Major, and Post-College Earnings
by William Brian Muse  and  Iryna Muse
Abstract
College choice and choice of major are the most important decisions for future earnings. It is still unclear, however, what makes a greater difference—college or major—or whether a choice of college matters more for some majors, but not the others. Using cross-classified models and College Scorecard data, I show that a discipline is more consequential for future ear [...] Read more

by Yuan Gu , Long Wu , Yasir Hameed  and  Mohsen Nabi-Afjadi
Abstract
Cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) have emerged as a promising strategy for enhancing the membrane permeability of bioactive molecules, particularly in the treatment of central nervous system diseases. CPPs possess the ability to deliver a diverse array of bioactive molecules into cells using either covalent or non-covalent approaches, with a preference for non-covalent methods t [...] Read more
